Let’s Talk About Kids’ Foot Problems: A Parent’s Guide
As kids grow and explore their world through running, jumping, and playing, sometimes their feet need a bit of extra care. Let’s chat about some common foot problems we see in children and how we can help your little ones stay active and comfortable.
Rolling Feet and Flat Arches
Have you noticed your child’s feet rolling inward when they walk? This is called over-pronation, and it’s quite common in growing kids. While it often sorts itself out as they grow, sometimes it can lead to aches and pains in their ankles, knees, hips, or even lower back. Don’t worry though – we’ve got plenty of ways to help, from choosing the right shoes to using orthotic devices that support their feet just where they need it and more.
Growing Pains in the Heels
If your child’s complaining about sore heels, especially during sports, they might have what we call Calcaneal Apophysitis. It’s quite a mouthful, isn’t it? But really, it’s just growing pains in their heel bone. The good news is that it usually goes away by itself by around age 15. In the meantime, we can help keep them comfortable and active in their favourite sports and mitigate long term problems resulting.
Knee Niggles
Sometimes kids get knee pain (called Osgood-Schlatter’s) that’s connected to how their legs and feet work together when moving. Think of it like a chain reaction – when one part isn’t moving quite right, it can affect other areas. We can look at ways to help their feet move better, which often helps their knees feel better too.
Troublesome Toenails
Those pesky ingrown toenails can be a real pain! Sometimes babies are born with them, and they’re pretty common in growing feet – especially when shoes get a bit tight. If you spot one, it’s best to get it checked out early to avoid any nasty infections. Sometimes they need a small procedure to fix them properly, but we’ll make sure your little one is comfortable every step of the way.
The Sneaky Stuff – Warts and Fungal Infections
Kids love swimming and running around barefoot, don’t they? But sometimes this can lead to unwanted visitors like warts or athlete’s foot, especially in wet areas around pools. Don’t stress though – these are super common and very treatable. We can help you stop them from coming back too!
Walking Patterns
Every child develops differently, and it’s normal to see things like in-toeing (pigeon toes), out-toeing (duck feet), bowed legs, or knocked knees in little ones under four. Most of these sort themselves out as kids grow, but if you notice your child is having trouble keeping up with their mates at school or complaining about sore legs or feet, it’s worth having a chat with us.
